Organic coffee sounds good on paper and feels good at the checkout. But what does “organic coffee” actually mean? Does it make a difference? And, crucially, does it taste any good? We checked out the sustainability claims, organic credentials, and customer reviews of the most popular organic coffee on Amazon. Why? For starters, we were skeptical they would hold up to scrutiny. Secondly, we drink an unholy amount of coffee, and we genuinely want to know who the “good guys” are. What we discovered may surprise you (it certainly surprised us).
Now, you may be wondering why we’d even recommend coffee on Amazon, and yeah, we get it. Anything that comes from a faraway land and gets delivered by van to your door has to have a sizable carbon footprint. But, the reality is that hundreds of thousands of people—maybe even more?—order coffee on Amazon. If we can help a few of those people choose a more ethical, sustainable cup of bean juice then we reckon that’s a win.
Why Drink Organic Fair Trade Coffee?
Choosing organic, fair trade coffee is more than a preference; it’s a choice that contributes to a healthier, fairer coffee industry. By going organic, you’re opting for coffee that avoids harmful chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides etc) resulting in a purer taste and a cleaner planet. And with fair trade, your purchase supports sustainable incomes for farmers, allowing them to invest in their communities and grow high-quality beans. Beyond the benefits to farmers and the planet, many find organic, fair trade coffee simply tastes better—a product of healthier growing conditions and more traditional farming practices. So each cup becomes a small, meaningful contribution to a better way of doing things.
The Best Organic and Fair Trade Coffee on Amazon
Not everyone has the time or patience to look beyond the first few products you see when you search “organic coffee” on Amazon. Thankfully, we do. How We Chose the Best Organic, Fair Trade Coffee Brands
Just like a good brew of coffee, we filtered these brands through a series of criteria. We only had four key criteria, but as it turns out, that was enough to disqualify almost all of the coffee brands on Amazon—including a bunch of the “sustainable” ones.
Organic Certification
We verified the organic certification of each coffee brand.
Third-Party Testing
Most coffee is third-party tested for mycotoxins, pesticide residue and other harmful chemicals.
Fair Trade Certification
All brands are either Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certified, or demonstrate standards equal to or beyond these.
Quality
We looked for things like single origin, specialty coffee, shade grown, customer satisfaction, and other quality control measures.

- Mold and mycotoxin free
- Non-toxic Decaffeination

Purity Coffee is uniquely devoted to maximizing the nutritional value of its coffee while eliminating health hazards, including pesticide residue, mold, and mycotoxins. They even bought their own farm in Colombia so they can have total oversight of the growing process.
Purity Coffee’s blends are created around their health benefits. Flow is for all-round health, Ease is for easy digestion, Balance is a low-caffeine blend, and Protect is for liver health. All coffee is third-party tested for impurities and nutrient content. They also use the non-toxic Swiss Water® Process for decaffeination. All Purity Coffee’s packaging is recyclable or biodegradable, with the exception of coffee bags, which will be transitioned in 2024.
Customer feedback on taste is generally positive with smoothness being a standout feature. However, some customers find it’s not as bold or punchy as they’d like. This top-of-the-line organic, non-toxic coffee does come at a premium, but for health-conscious coffee drinkers, the investment’s a no-brainer.
Purity Coffee Reviews
“Just plain amazing coffee. The best I’ve ever tasted. Grind fairly coarse & Percolate on the stove over medium-low heat for 10 minutes. We permanently switched from Bulletproof Coffee because the flavor is so much smoother. My husband now uses one third less sweetener! & I actually started drinking coffee again!” — Purity Coffee Flow
“The only coffee I can drink that doesn’t hurt my stomach! Every morning I am grateful to have Purity dark roast ease coffee that wakes me up without upsetting my stomach.” — Purity Coffee Flow
2. Lifeboost Coffee
What we like ✅
- USDA Organic Certified
- Fair Trade Certified
- Specialty Grade Coffee
- Single Origin Beans
- Tests for 400+ Toxins
- 30-Day Money Back Guarantee
- Low Acidity
This single-origin, shade-grown coffee is 100% USDA Organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade certified, sourced from the mountains of Nicaragua. Lifeboost Coffee leans heavily on the fact it’s founded and recommended by coffee-loving medical professionals. Its trademarked TrustPure™ process tests for more than 400 toxins to ensure the coffee is free from mold, mycotoxins, pesticide residues and other impurities. The beans are low-acid, making Lifeboost a great choice for people with sensitive stomachs.
Lifeboost Coffee is available in light, medium and dark roasts, as well as a decaf, 50-50 (half-caf) and mushroom blend. While each blend has a unique flavor profile, the general consensus is Lifeboost Coffee is smooth, well-balanced, and easy to drink. However, some customers find it too mild. Lifeboost also has flavored options—french vanilla and hazelnut—which is rare with organic coffee.
Lifeboost’s commitment to health, sustainability and quality is about as good as it gets. However, it would be great to see a Sustainability Report and recyclable packaging in future. The coffee isn’t cheap, but you can save around 30% when you sign up for a subscription—and there’s a high chance you’re gonna want a subscription if you try this coffee.
Lifeboost Coffee Reviews
“I love this coffee! I have acid reflux and I usually have some heartburn after drinking regular coffee. Not with this coffee! It’s smooth, tastes like coffee should taste and no bad after taste! I definitely recommend it even though it’s a little pricey, it is worth it!” — Light Roast Beans
“Coffee is my favorite morning ritual but most coffee brands give me heartburn. Not to mention coffee beans are loaded with mold and pesticide. Lifeboost solves both problems for me. Instead of being acidic, Lifeboost is more alkaline so no more heartburn. Most people don’t know how much mold and pesticides they are ingesting with average coffee brands. Once I realized how toxic the other brands were, I decided to research the best brands and Lifeboost was at the top of the heap. The taste is superior to every other brand out there and I’ll admit I’ve become a bit of a coffee snob. Even my pickiest friends love Lifeboost and they are always asking to take a picture of the bag so they can order it.” — Medium Roast Beans
3. Lavazza Tierra Organic Coffee
What we like ✅
- USDA Organic Certified
- Rainforest Alliance Certified
- EcoVadis Gold Medal
- Sustainable Packaging Roadmap
- Sustainability Report
- Supporting coffee farmers
Lavazza Tierra (tierra means “earth” in Spanish) is Lavazza’s certified-organic coffee range. It was launched in 2002 in partnership with Rainforest Alliance. Lavazza’s been around for more than 125 years and is one of Italy’s—and the world’s—best-known coffee brands. It’s important to note that most of Lavazza’s coffee is not organic nor particularly ethical, but the Tierra range is an earnest effort to create coffee that’s better for farmers, the environment, and your daily caffeine fix.
Lavazza Tierra is USDA organic certified and Rainforest Alliance certified, which covers social, economic and environmental sustainability. The company has a laundry list of other social, economic, and environmental initiatives, outlined in its detailed annual Sustainability Report.
As for the taste? A lot of this comes down to how you prepare it. Lavazza Tierra comes in light and medium roast blends from East Africa, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, as well as special edition blends, each with their own distinctive aroma and flavor profiles. The most popular varieties on Tierra for Planet and Tierra Selection. Note: Some Tierra blends seem to be more accessible in Europe than the United States.
Lavazza Tierra Coffee Reviews
“Upon brewing, this coffee delivers a remarkably smooth and well-balanced flavor profile. There are delightful notes of chocolate and nuts, with a subtle sweetness that lingers pleasantly on the palate. The taste is full-bodied without being overpowering, making it perfect for both morning wake-up calls and afternoon pick-me-ups.” — Tierra for Planet, light roast
“Take this as a warning: if you don’t want to spend this much money on your daily coffee, don’t try this coffee because you can’t un-taste it! There’s no hope for us, we’re hooked- there might be other coffee out there that is as good, but you won’t find it at a grocery or warehouse club; this is a coffee I can end the search on. Is it worth close to $30 a bag? I don’t know, all I know is I want it, I need it . . . okay, yes it’s worth it.” — Tierra Selection, medium roast
4. Equal Exchange Coffee
What we like ✅
- USDA Organic certified
- Fairly Traded
- Specialty Coffee
- Small farmer grown
- Worker-owned cooperative
Equal Exchange Coffee was pioneering fairly traded coffee in the United States before most of the brands on this list had even heard of “fair trade”. They’ve been leaders in the industry since the 1980s.
Equal Exchange Coffee is certified organic, but they abandoned fair trade certification many years ago. The company has adopted what it calls “authentic fair trade” practices that go above and beyond what’s required by certifiers (if you want to know more about this, check out the comic they created). Equal Exchange works directly with small coffee farmers and farmer cooperatives all over the world. They pay farmers over and above “fair” wages and provide additional support on the ground with environmental, community and business initiatives.
Equal Exchange roasts its own organic coffee in Massachusetts daily with their Quality Control team providing oversight. Every batch is “cupped” to make sure it meets high standards for aroma, flavor, and quality. The coffee has a reputation for being smooth, well-balanced, and complex.
Equal Exchange is one of those companies that restores your hope in humankind. They aren’t just creating great-tasting, ethical coffee, they’re working to transform the entire food system. I’ll drink to that!
Equal Exchange Coffee Reviews
“I was looking for the best value ORGANIC dark roasted beans. These days you can’t be safe enough with all the pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers being used. I grind these very fine in my burr grinder and drink two very strong espresso shots every day and I go through a lot of beans as a result, so I want to know I am putting good stuff in my body. It was the best value for money I could find and I am loving the bold flavor, it tastes as good as or better as my warehouse club french roast beans, but it is ORGANIC. It is more expensive than my warehouse beans, but I am willing to pay more in order to be assured I’m putting good stuff in my body.” — Equal Exchange Love Buzz Blend
“I don’t drink coffee much, and when I do, I usually drown it in a sugary creamer. This coffee was different – it was the first coffee I’ve ever had that I actually enjoyed with nothing but milk. I don’t know much about coffee, so I can’t comment on the intricacies of the flavor — but for those who are trying to get into coffee, I’d give this a go.” — Equal Exchange Mind, Body, Soul Blend
5. Tiny Footprint Coffee
What we like ✅
- Carbon negative
- USDA Organic Certified
- Reforestation Commitment
- Fair Trade Certified
- Rainforest Alliance Certified
Tiny Footprint Coffee claims to be the world’s first carbon negative coffee. Tiny Footprint has contributed to significant reforestation projects in Ecuador, Honduras and El Salvador through collaborations with conservation organizations, Mindo Cloudforest Foundation, Clima Cafe, and Tiny Carbon. For every 4 pounds of carbon Tiny Footprint Coffee produces, the company claims to remove 54 pounds of carbon from the atmosphere through tree planting initiatives.
The coffee is USDA Organic certified, shade grown, and, for the most part, either Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certified. However, Tiny Footprint also sources coffee from small, family-run farms that aren’t eligible for Fair Trade certification. The company sources single origin coffee from all over the world, including Mexico, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Sumatra, Colombia, and more. They also sell coffee blends, decaf coffee, and a cold brew blend.
We love that Tiny Footprint includes information about the farmers they work with on their product pages. They also prioritize working with women coffee producers. It would be great to see a Sustainability Report sometime that goes into their carbon negative story in more detail. But something tells us Tiny Footprint cares more about the work they’re putting in on the ground than trying to convince the rest of us that it’s important and, to be completely honest with you, we dig that.
Tiny Footprint Coffee Reviews
“Friends gifted us a pound of Tiny Footprint Nicaragua Segovia Dark Roast which they were buying largely because it is lead-free. My response was that worrying over lead in my coffee is low on my list of things to fret about. But we had a cup at their house and…it…was…delicious. Now, that is worth fretting over. So, we’re regulars. We buy a 2 lb. bag every 3 weeks, grind our own and sip happily.” — Nicaragua Segovia Dark Roast
“This is our house choice for cold brew beans. The flavor is complex and well-balanced with chocolate notes when brewed for 16-18 hours… The true measure of a coffee’s worth is how you feel when you must drink something else. This coffee has ruined me for travel—nothing else even tastes like coffee anymore, cold brew or not. No matter how awesome the trip, I am always thankful to get back home to my Tiny Footprint cold brew. Give this one a try—it is truly unmatched and could become your new house brew of choice.” — Organic Cold Brew Elixir
6. Ethical Bean Coffee
What we like ✅
- 100% certified organic
- Fair Trade certified
- Fully traceable coffee
- Seasonally harvested beans
- Compostable coffee pods
- Recycling program
Ethical Bean Coffee is 100% organic and 100% Fair Trade—tick, tick. The coffee is hand-selected by Canada’s first Certified Q Grader, which means they’ve been trained in the sensory evaluation of green coffee. Essentially, they can identify the best-tasting coffee with a simple sniff test.Their beans are also seasonally sourced to maximize freshness.
Ethical Bean Coffee is “origin agnostic” meaning they source their beans from Fair Trade producers all over the world (mostly South and Central America) based on freshness and availability.
Another nice touch is their decaf coffee is decaffeinated using the Mountain Water Process, which is 100% chemical free.
Ethical Bean Coffee comes in a range of roasts from superdark to medium-dark. Important note: Ethical Bean Coffee was acquired by Kraft Heinz Company in 2018. This might be a red flag for some people. One other thing to note is Ethical Bean seems to be more accessible and popular in its homeland, Canada, than the United States.
Ethical Bean Coffee Reviews
“To say it’s one of the tastiest coffees I’ve ever had would be an understatement. It’s strong without being too bold. The chocolate and fruit tones are aromatic and glorious. It’s like waking up to a spring dawn every morning. If that sounds frou frou poetic, it’s the kind of imagery this coffee conjures.” — Ethical Bean Lush, Medium-Dark Roast
“For it’s price point, this is hands down one of the best coffees there is out there.
When measured correctly, it brews a nice, crisp cup of coffee that tastes like coffee, not blended with nuts and fruits and other crap, just nice coffee. It’s rich, yet smooth; Bold yet tasty.” — Ethical Bean Classique, Medium Roast Beans
